Fiberglass Subwoofer Enclosures
2008
If you have never made a fiberglass subwoofer enclosure before then you might think that it is a better idea if you buy what you need from someone else. Because if you are thinking of actually making your own fiberglass subwoofer enclosure then you could be in for a long and stressful ride. Making one of your own fiberglass subwoofer enclosures is a very tough thing to do. If you have all the right equipment then that of course is a good start but then is the tough part of getting everything into your ride, so that you can ride around blaring out your selection of music.
Newbies are not recommended to do this on their own. Sometimes the information that they have regarding the thickness of the MDF is not correct. Some people think that the thickness of the MDF should be 1 inch (newbie). Others believe that it depends on the power of the subwoofer; I and a lot of other people are more prone to using a custom thickness which depends on power of the subwoofer, the size, and the number of curves in the enclosure. It just works better that way.
Right then first things first you will need to find the right size area for some speakers to go into. The tire well on many cars is the perfect place for this. Also you can make an awesome mould if your think that you can do that. Anyway first of all you put see-through plastic around the whole trunk of your car. If you get any fiberglass resin onto the upholstery of your car then it cannot be removed. What you can also do is cover the area that is going to be molded with fiberglass with aluminum foil. Aluminum foil can be easily peeled off afterwards.
After you have taken out all the panels and or carpeting then you can apply the mold release or aluminum foil to the surface. Then you lay the fiberglass and let it dry.
Now it is time to lay the first layer. You should first of all mix resin and hardener; obviously just mix what you will need. Then cut your fiberglass mat the size you need before you wet it. When you wet the fiberglass mat you can take one of two choices. You can dip the mat in the resin mixture, or you can just simply use a brush to spread it on it’s your choice. Once it is wet you can place the mat onto the area which will shape it. If you are a newbie then this part might be somewhat tricky because the mat will tend to stick to every single part of your body.
Considering the fact that you are making a fiberglass subwoofer enclosure you will need to add some more layers. All you have to do is follow the procedure that you used to make the first layer.
Now you are ready to finish your fiberglass subwoofer enclosure. The smoothness will always depend on what material you will use to cover the fiberglass subwoofer enclosure. Using a carpet will cover up any imperfections that might of occurred during your construction of your fiberglass subwoofer enclosure.
