How to Build a Subwoofer Box

A popular activity in our culture today is to “Pimp ones Ride”. This basically means to cram as much “stuff” into your car as possible to make it “cool”. However, most people that wish to engage in this activity are faced with a simple problem, namely money. You see it costs a buck or two to get your chariot over to the nearest car customs shop and have all kinds of things installed into it. If you do not have that kind of money, but still have a subwoofer, do not panic! Now, with limited manual work experience you can learn how to build your own subwoofer box! “Build my own subwoofer box? But how?” This can be done very cheaply with a minimum of materials, here goes!
To start you off you will need the following things:
- 3/4 inch medium-density Fiberboard, Jigsaw, Router, Power drill, Down Spiral Bit, 3/4 inch bit, File, Sandpaper, Razor Blade or Scalpel, Spray Glue, Pencil, Tape measure, Solder, Soldering Iron, Silicone, Calculator, Scratch Paper, Carpet
- A Good amount of time and willingness to be frustrated with your own inability, as well as a good spirit and sense of Humor
- Check with your subwoofer manufacturer to figure out the proper dimensions of your enclosure. You need to know if the dimensions are interior or exterior. If Interior, you need to take into account the 3/4-inch thickness of the wood you will be using, if exterior you are good to go because the manufacturer has taken care of that for you.
Now how to build the subwoofer box?
Steps:
1. Trace out the pattern of the enclosure on the fiberboard with pencil and tape. Trace out all six sides of the box as well as a centre divider for the inside to separate the two speakers.
2. Cut out the patterns with Jigsaw
3. With the pattern for the top of the box, using the frame of the grille of the subwoofer speaker and a pencil, trace the outer and inner portions of the frame onto the location of the board where you intend to place the speakers.
4. Take the router with a 3/4-inch bit and set it for a cutting depth of 3/8-inch. Route out the area between the inner and outer circle. This is where the frame of the speaker will rest flush mounted on the finished box
5. Cut out speaker holes with Jigsaw
6. Smooth edges of hole with file, use sandpaper t smooth router area
7. Cut a 2-inch round hole in each side panel. This will be for the Speaker wire connectors.
8. Assemble box with screws, use silicone to plug holes. Leave front side of box open for now.
9. Spray glue on to the outer portion of the box and the back of the carpet, and wrap the carpet tightly onto the box.
10. Apply carpet to the top panel (the one that will house the speakers).
11. Using the razor blade or scalpel, cut vertical, horizontal and angled lines in a star pattern into the carpet that covers the holes for the speakers. Cut out the carpet that covers the connector holes.
12. Place the connectors into holes, so that prong terminals inside box
13. Screw down connectors and seal with silicone
14. Solder speaker wire to each speaker and connector. Solder positive wire to positive lead of speaker, do the same for negative lead and speaker.
15. Screw front panel on box
16. Push each speaker into pattern cut into carpet that covers front panel.
17. Install box in your Car
18. Finished! You just learned how to build your own subwoofer box!
